Description:
Important XF40 1916 Nickel
Doubled Die Obverse
1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse XF40 PCGS. CAC. FS-101, formerly FS-016. While the date area's doubling is most famous on this Guide Book variety, the profile, hair ribbon, and the feathers at the back of the head are also strongly duplicated. As strong as this doubled die is, it was little-publicized until multiple decades after its release, unlike the instantly famous 1955 doubled die cent, often compared to this variety for the strength of the doubling.
This XF survivor is above the curve in terms of preservation, with the date area still clear and the bison's horn fully intact. Though the high points show plain wear, most notably on the bison's shoulder and hipbone, the sage and peach-gray surfaces remain luminous. Minimally marked for the grade with excellent eye appeal. For the variety, Population: 7 in 40, 52 finer (2/10).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 2TSS, PCGS# 3931)
