Description:
Challenging 1916 Doubled Die Nickel XF45
1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse XF45 PCGS. FS-016. Well balanced pearl-gray surfaces with deeper flecks of gunmetal coloration primarily in the recesses. Like all genuine 1916 Doubled Dies, the date is boldly and dramatically doubled. The 1916/16 is among the rarest issues from the 20th century that are included as part of a regular U.S. series. It was first published in the July 1962 edition of The Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine, but was not widely known to the collecting community until the mid-1970s, since enjoying ever-increasing demand from collectors. (NGC ID# 2TSS, PCGS# 3931)
