Description

1918/7-D Buffalo Nickel, Toned MS62
Scarce Dual-Hubbing Error

1918/7-D 5C MS62 NGC. FS-101. The 1918/7-D Buffalo nickel overdate has a close sibling in the 1918/7-S Standing Liberty quarter. Both are branch mint overdates produced in the same year, the products of generous wartime mintages near the close of World War I. They were produced in an era when the production of coinage dies and hubs was the total responsibility of the Philadelphia Mint, a task that facility hung onto for more than 200 years, until the Denver Mint opened its own die shop in 1996.
Both the overdate nickel and quarter were produced in the same way, via coinage dies that were given one blow from a 1917-dated hub and one from a 1918-dated hub. Mintmarks were also applied in Philadelphia before the dies were shipped to their respective destinations. Note that the actual overdated dies had to be produced in 1917 -- likely toward the end of the year, when production of the next year's dies was under way -- while the overdated coins were probably produced in 1918.
This MS62 coin shows almost equal definition on each of the digits. It is quite surprising how strong the underlying 7 is. Satiny mint luster appears over each side, accented by rich rose and faint hints of lilac toning. A bit weakly struck, as usually seen.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 22RJ, PCGS# 3939)
