Description:

Lustrous MS62+ 1918/7-D Nickel
Strong Example of Popular Overdate
1918/7-D 5C MS62+ PCGS. CAC. FS-101. The overwhelming majority of 1918/7-D Buffalo nickels appear in the grade range from Very Good to Very Fine. David Lange comments concerning this sought-after variety that the overdate is "seldom visible below VG, which is the grade most often found. A number of coins grading VG-F may also be available at large shows, but anything in higher grades is rare."

Lange goes on to speculate that perhaps two dozen Uncirculated survivors exist, after accounting for duplicates in the NGC-PCGS population data. Heritage has been privileged to offer Gem examples of this overdate on numerous occasions. Particularly notable is the Joseph C. Thomas Collection coin, which garnered $253,000 in our Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2009), lot 2136, and $264,500 in our FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2010), lot 2458. The 1918/7-D, which Lange calls "the most desired variety in this series," is of course in demand in all grades. Our Permanent Auction Archives contain hundreds of appearances, ranging from the aforementioned Gems down to acid-treated Fair 2 specimens.

This example is on the threshold of Select status and most desirable. Green-gold and apricot overtones grace nickel-gray surfaces with quicksilver luster. A few wispy abrasions are visible on high points such as the hair just above the braid, but the coin has surprisingly few marks by the MS62 standard. Population: 12 in 62 (1 in 62+), 34 finer (3/13).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 22RJ, PCGS# 3939)
