Description:

1923-S Nickel, Sharp MS66 Example
One of Three at PCGS, Sole CAC Piece
1923-S 5C MS66 PCGS. CAC. This incredible 1923-S Buffalo nickel is one of only three in MS66 at PCGS, and among those, it is the only one that also bears the CAC endorsement. While this coin is not fully struck, it is far better-struck than most survivors of this strike-challenged issue; in fact, the strike is sharp to the point that this 1923-S more resembles some other S-mint issue with a reputation for a bold strike, such as a 1915-S. A bit of softness shows at the letter tops of LIBERTY and just above the braid, but note how sharp the remainder of the hair is, as well as the arrow feathers and the date. The reverse is overall even better-struck than the obverse. UNITED STATES OF is sharp, while AMERICA is a bit soft. The horn, head, and face of the buffalo are sharp, but minor weakness appears at the rear of the ruff, and the tail is split but barely so. This piece had the good fortune, clearly, to have been struck from dies that were still fairly fresh front and back, and to have been impressed with sufficient pressure and proper die spacing to produce this marvelous piece. The surfaces are free of major marks, although a small dark spot just behind the front legs provides a pedigree marker. Attractive, even pinkish-golden patina caps the appeal. An unimprovable essential for Registry Set collectors.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 22RW, PCGS# 3950)
