Description:
Appealing 1823/2 Small E's Dime, JR-1, MS66
Tied for the Finest Known
1823/2 10C Small Es MS66 NGC. JR-1, R.3. Two obverse dies are known and both feature the 1823/2 overdate. This variety is identified by the reverse, which has small E's in the legend. The 1823 ranks on the scarcer side compared to other Capped Bust dimes, but it is still readily available in most grades. However, Premium Gem examples are virtually unheard of. NGC, which usually does not distinguish between Small and Large E's, has only graded two MS66 examples of both varieties, with none finer. PCGS has not certified any pieces above MS65 and reports just two Small E's specimens at that level (7/09).
Scintillating satiny luster radiates beneath the rich toning. A lovely ring of lilac and rose surrounds the gunmetal-gray fields, while the high points show hints of steel-blue patina. The eagle's head and Liberty's hair are a trifle soft. Careful inspection with a loupe reveals only a couple of nearly imperceptible handling marks. This outstanding specimen is housed in an early NGC holder.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2372, PCGS# 4498)
