Description

Sharp 1807 50 Over 20 Half Dollar, MS65 PCGS

1807 50C Capped Bust, Large Stars, 50 Over 20 MS65 PCGS. O-112, R.1. In this variety, star 1 points between dentil segments, there is a center dot near the junction of the left wing (facing) and the shield, and a die defect dot is found below the lowest arrowhead. Unlike the other two 50 over 20 varieties, the base of the 2 fragment is very weak or does not show at all. On this particular example, the base of the 2 is not visible. The obverse features light to medium-intensity golden-brown toning, which is a shade or two lighter on the reverse. The design elements are well brought up, with strong star centers, good detail in most of Liberty's hair curls and the features of the eagle. All of the letters of LIBERTY and E PLURIBUS UNUM are sharp. The surfaces reveal pleasing luster, and are remarkably well preserved. A trivial, small mark on Liberty's chin, and a couple of more on the neck and bust do not detract in the least from the overall eye appeal of this marvelous Bust half dollar.(#6088) (NGC ID# 24EN, PCGS# 6088)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
