Description

1813 O-105a Half Dollar, MS64
Condition Census Example
Possibly the Finest Late Die State Piece

1813 50C MS64 NGC. O-105a, R.3. This piece has a prominent die crack across the stem and olive branch as described in the Overton reference for late die state coins. It also has many other characteristics that suggest a late state of both dies. This beautiful piece has satiny silver luster with bold central design elements and splendid iridescent toning. Weak peripheral details are a result of the late die state rather than a deficiency in the original strike. This piece is a clear Condition Census example of the variety, and may be the finest known late die state coin. Census: 23 in 64, 17 finer (2/11) for all 1813 varieties.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 24EZ, PCGS# 6103)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.

I received the catalog and was very impressed with its color illustrations, descriptions and attractive layout. (It has better production values than the New York houses.)
