Description

1814 O-103 Half Dollar, MS66
Early Die State
No Obverse Clash Marks

1814 50C MS66 NGC. O-103, R.1. A heavy die ridge from the left end of the scroll down to the wing is common to all known examples of O-103. Overton mentions obverse clash marks on most specimens. However, this early die state specimen has no such clash marks. A few high grade O-103 half dollars survive, and the present specimen ranks among the five or six finest known.
This impressive Premium Gem has brilliant mint frost, showing ivory luster and peripheral gold toning with splashes of blue. Slight weakness is noted at the right (facing) claws and arrowheads, with all other details strongly defined. Census: 6 in 66, 3 finer (11/11), for all 1814 varieties.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 24F3, PCGS# 6105)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
