Description

1815/2 Capped Bust Half Dollar, AU53
Key Date, O-101

1815/2 50C AU53 NGC. CAC. O-101, R.2. The entire small mintage of 47,150 half dollars from 1815 was produced using a single pair of dies with the 1815/2 overdate, making an instant key in the series. The 1817/3 half dollar has the interesting distinction of being the most disparate Bust half variety between the overdigit and the underdigit -- at four years -- with the virtually unobtainable 1817/4 and the popular and available 1815/2 in second place. Slate-gray, lighter silver, rose, and gold hues run through still-lustrous fields, with the lightest color appearing as worn areas on the high points. The surfaces are nonetheless lightly circulated and show few marks of any note. Die clashing appears on each side, although the die state is too early for the reverse die cracks that distinguish the O-101a.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 24F5, PCGS# 6108)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
