Description

Beautiful 1818 Capped Bust Half MS66

1818 50C MS66 NGC. O-114, R.3. Star 1 is widely repunched, and this helps identify this relatively scarce die marriage. This magnificent Capped Bust half is delightfully toned in blended gold and silver-gray hues. The fully lustrous surfaces are flawless aside from a solitary hair-thin mark between star 1 and the bust tip. The strike is also impressive, since only the right (facing) claw lacks intricate detail. NGC population data for the 1818 is jumbled between figures for the date and by variety. Apparently, O-114a is more available than the earlier state O-114, since seven pieces have been certified for the former, while only a single example (not the present piece) is listed as O-114. None grade higher than MS62. As a date, without any variety specification, two pieces (including the present coin) have been certified as MS66, with none finer.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 24F9, PCGS# 6113)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
