Description

The Finest Certified 1818 Half Dollar, A Superb Representative of the O-111 Die Marriage

1818 50C MS67 NGC. O-111, R.1. As the single finest certified 1818 Capped Bust Half Dollar (4/02), this Superb Gem is also most likely the finest known representative of O-111. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first auction appearance of this important coin. Small, isolated swirls of silver-gray brilliance peer through the champagne-apricot tinting that overlays much of the obverse. The same colors are also evident on the reverse, but the former is dominant. The luster is simply extraordinary for the type with a thickly frosted texture and swirling cartwheel effects. Expertly produced with razor sharp definition over the major design elements and nearly complete denticulation around both sides. A coin for the collector who will accept nothing but the best for their collection. (NGC ID# 24F9, PCGS# 6113)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
