Description:
1822 50C VF35 NGC. O-108, R.3. Star seven gently touches the front of the liberty cap on the obverse of this variety. The reverse has an extra horizontal line on the left (facing) under the lowest shield crossbar that turns downward to become an extra rightmost line in the first set of vertical stripes. The present specimen is a dark silver-gray, with few mentionable problems aside from circulation wear. This coin is in an intermediate die state between the O-108 and the O-108a as Overton outlines. An obverse die crack is lightly visible near the lowest hair curl and 22 in the date. A reverse crack joins the rim with the left claw. A second reverse crack runs right from this crack only through 50 before terminating. A third very light reverse crack runs all the way from the olive leaves through the base of UNITED and upward through STA to the rim. A die chip fills the top of N.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
