Description

High Rarity 5 1823 O-109, VG8 NGC

1823 50C VG8 NGC. O-109, High R.5. This very rare variety has extensive obverse die cracks that aid attribution. Shortly before the O-109 reverse was married to this obverse, one crack, running from the bust to stars one through four, extended to star five. Heavy wear on this coin makes it difficult, but not impossible, to trace this crack all the way to star five. The reverse is distinctive because the I in E PLURIBUS UNUM is well left of the T in STATES, the A in STATES lacks an inner right serif and is rotated counterclockwise, and the first A in AMERICA has complete serifs (unlike on the O-108). The present coin has pleasing, light gray surfaces. Examination with a glass reveals a couple of hairline scrapes above the eagle and a small rim bump on the reverse near the R in AMERICA.
Ex: Charlton Meyer (11/16/1987). Envelope Included.(Registry values: N208) (NGC ID# 24FJ, PCGS# 6131)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
