Description:
1828 Curl Base 2, Knob O-106, R.4
1828 50C Curl Base 2, Knob XF40 NGC. O-106, R.4. This variety and the more common O-107 share similar obverses, but with some important distinctions: both have the curl base 2 with knob top, but the O-107 has star 13 extremely close to the hair curl, the serif of 1 is only a quarter of a millimeter from the drapery, and a die line pierces the headband beneath I of LIBERTY. This O-106 lacks the latter die line, the serif of 1 is a bit farther from the drapery, and star 13 is farther from the hair curl. The present specimen possesses smoke-gray surfaces that are fairly well struck from uneroded dies. It reveals few flaws aside from grade-consistent wear.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
