Description

Beautifully Toned 1833 Overton-108 Half Dollar, MS65

1833 50C MS65 PCGS. O-108, R.1. On this variety, the date is low and is located close to the dentils, with close, thick figures in the date. It is noted in the Parsley book that Liberty's mouth has a "pleasant expression." The 50 C on the reverse is very high. Study of this strongly struck example under a glass reveals that line 1 of stripe 5 is visible to the fifth crossbar and line 10 extends far into the right wing. This Gem displays strong cartwheel luster over smooth surfaces. Rotating this specimen under a light really shows off the attractive toning--shades of gray, blue and reddish-gold jump from the surfaces and are pleasing to the eye. A specimen graded PCGS MS68 may be the finest known example of this variety. It realized $89,700 in a January 2005 auction sale! The 1990 Parsley Condition Census is listed as (64, 63, 63, 63, 63). Steve Herrman's AMBPR lists the PCGS MS68 above, along with two examples in MS65 and two in MS64. It would be fun to compare this specimen with the five listed above to see how the Condition Census might read today.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 24FX, PCGS# 6163)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
