1815 25C MS65 NGC....
Gem B-1 1815 Quarter, Ex: Ashland City1815 25C MS65 NGC. Ex: Ashland City Collection. B-1, R.1. The 1815 is is the premier issue in the Capped Bust quarter series. While popular for first-year type purposes, the 1815 is probably more desirable as a low-mintage, conditionally challenging date. A mere 89,235 pieces were produced from the single obverse and reverse die marriage known for the date. Circulated and lower-Mint State survivors are available fairly regularly, but Gems are undeniably rare. Only nine examples are known between NGC and PCGS combined, with eight pieces certified finer (4/09).
The present example is an early die state with no clash marks. Reverse repunching appears on the base of the second T and the A in STATES. This is an uncommonly well-struck representative of the design, with full denticulation at the borders and crisp definition over virtually all features. Both sides display frosty luster and are virtually untoned, save for some wispy light gray streaks. A handful of grade-consistent ticks are noted. A tiny planchet void in the obverse field, before Liberty's nose, is a worthwhile pedigree marker. Census: 4 in 65, 5 finer without the enigmatic "E" and "L" counterstamps the issue is known for (4/09).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 23RG, PCGS# 5321)
