Second Overdate Obverse Die Use

1818 25C MS65 NGC. B-3, R.3. The overdate obverse die is now in its second use, with remnants of the overdate still visible on the flat upper surface of the second 8. The reverse die is cracked through the lower arrow, nearly reaching the shield, and also shows clash marks below the scroll. Another crack is faintly visible from an olive leaf, across the left wing tip, to the U.

About a dozen Gem or finer examples of 1818 B-3 are known, and these pieces are candidates for a type, date, and variety collectors. This example has frosty luster with lovely champagne and iridescent toning. Census: 24 in 65, 13 finer (1/13), for all 1818 varieties.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 23RH, PCGS# 5322)
