Description:
1821 Quarter, B-3, MS65
Sharp Example With Colorful Patina
1821 25C MS65 NGC. B-3, R.3 or R.2. The availability of the B-3 quarter die marriage of 1821 makes the issue a perfect one for type purposes, and the high eye appeal of this Gem neatly fits this piece into a desirable niche. Star 7 points to the headband, the last S in STATES is centered over (PLURIBU)S, and the first S is centered over P(L). Rust pits appear between the 2 of the denomination and the olive leaves. This piece tops the Condition Census in the Rea-Peterson-Karoleff-Kovach early quarters reference, tied with perhaps eight other examples. Mossy green and slate-blue compete with amber and pink patina on this near-unmarked Gem, which also boasts quite a sharp strike, save for a couple of the star centrils. We note that Tompkins lists the variety as R.2, while Rea et al. list it as R.3.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 23RM, PCGS# 5331)
