Description

1831 Capped Bust Quarter, MS65
Reduced Diameter, B-2 Variety

1831 25C Small Letters MS65 PCGS. CAC. B-2, R.2. Close collar technology was used on the quarter denomination for the first time in 1831. The size of the planchet was modified, with the diameter reduced and the thickness increased to maintain the standard weight. The scroll with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM was removed and some minor stylistic design changes were implemented. A large mintage of 398,000 pieces was accomplished, with seven die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the B-2 variety, with the small flat base 2 in the denomination and star 13 distant from the curl. The B-2 variety is readily available in lower grades, but examples in Gem condition are rare.

This delightful Gem displays well-detailed design elements, with just the usual touch of softness on the denomination. The lustrous surfaces are blanketed in attractive shades of lavender-gray and golden-brown toning. Vibrant mint luster shines through the patina. Population: 16 in 65 (1 in 65+), 4 finer (2/13).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 23RW, PCGS# 5348)
