Description

Lustrous 1834 Classic Head Half Eagle, Crosslet 4

1834 $5 Crosslet 4 AU58 PCGS. First year of issue for the newly created Classic Head design by William Kneass, designed in response to the lowering of the weight standard for gold coinage. The new design made it much easier to distinguish between old tenor and new tenor gold, as it was called at the time. Several die varieties are known, including this one with the Crosslet 4 obverse. These are highly desired among collectors, as they have been ever since their first listing in the Guide Book. This is a highly lustrous greenish-gold example with satiny fields. Only the slightest traces of wear are seen on the highest design points. The surfaces are moderately abraded as nearly always. This lovely half eagle is highly desirable for its combination of quality and scarcity.(#8172)(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25RU, PCGS# 8172)
