Description

1834 Plain 4 Five Dollar, First Head
McCloskey 3-C, R.5, MS64

1834 $5 Plain 4 MS64 PCGS Secure. First Head, Breen-6501, McCloskey 3-C, R.5. This is a simply gorgeous example of this First Head variety of 1834 characterized by: No Motto reverse; center stroke thick in the 8; plain 4 in the date; 34 distant; eagle has a tongue; and the 5 in the denomination is nearly left of the arrow feather. Although few collectors we know attempt a complete variety set of the Classic Head fives, such a set would be challenging, particularly in high grade. This piece offers frosty surfaces with orange-gold centers and greenish-gold rims. The surfaces are well-struck overall and show few signs of contact. Population: 39 in 64 (1 in 64+), 3 finer (3/13).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25RR, PCGS# 8171)
