Description

1835 Half Eagle, MS63
Fancy 8 Date Style

1835 $5 MS63 NGC. Second Head, Breen-6505, McCloskey 3-D, R.3. A smooth greenish-gold piece with ample luster and good eye appeal. The third star and the left shield border are not boldly struck, but the remainder of the design is sharp, unlike the majority of Uncirculated Classic half eagles. The 1835 is significantly scarcer than the introductory 1834 in Mint State, perhaps because the novelty of the design (and denomination, since U.S. gold coins had not significantly circulated prior) had receded by 1835. Census: 13 in 63, 12 finer (8/12), for all 1835 varieties.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25RV, PCGS# 8173)
