Description:
1838-D Classic Five, AU55
One-Year Type and First D-Mint Five
1838-D $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 1-A, R.3. The 1838-D is probably the most popular Dahlonega half eagle. It is a one-year type and represents the first year of the Dahlonega mint. At the Choice AU level it represents excellent value, with few examples known in higher grades. There are an estimated 300 to 350 coins believed known in all grades, with only 42 to 65 Almost Uncirculated pieces estimated extant. This is a bright yellow-gold example with just a hint of reddish patina. The strike details are strong on each side, and there are just a few slight abrasions scattered about.
