Description

1838-D Half Eagle
Uncirculated Details, Fully Struck

1838-D $5 -- Cleaned -- ANACS. MS60 Details. McCloskey 1-A, R.3. The only known dies for the introductory Dahlonega half eagle. This beautiful example is fully struck and displays pale peach-gold toning. Devoid of noticeable abrasions, though the luster is subdued across the open fields. A fairly late die state with clash marks beneath the horizontal shield lines and a slender crack through MERIC. Though the present piece is designated as "Cleaned," it should be remembered that only a few examples of this historic issue remain with original, unimpaired surfaces. The lot provides an opportunity to secure a high grade example at an affordable price.(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 25S6, PCGS# 8178)
