1838-D $5 --Improperly Cleaned--NGC Details. Unc. McCloskey 1-A, R.3....
Bold 1838-D McCloskey 1-A Half Eagle, Unc Details1838-D $5 --Improperly Cleaned--NGC Details. Unc. McCloskey 1-A, R.3. The reverse has faint peripheral die cracks through the tops of some letters. Only one die marriage is known for the 1838-D half eagles, and that single die pair was used to coin 20,583 half eagles, the entire Dahlonega gold coin production of the year. That production used just under 2,500 ounces of gold, probably all mined in the region. Although it has been cleaned, this satiny Mint State piece has decided green coloration with faint reflectivity on both sides. The design elements are boldly detailed. An excellent example for the advanced collector.(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 25S6, PCGS# 8178)
