Beautiful 1834 Quarter Eagle
MS64 Prooflike, McCloskey-A
Popular Classic Head Type Coin

1834 $2 1/2 Classic MS64 Prooflike NGC. Large Head, Breen-6140, McCloskey-A, R.3. The Classic Head design made its debut in 1834, to mark a change in weight of the U.S. gold coinage. This change was necessary to halt the exportation and melting that plagued the old-tenor gold coinage. From a mintage of 112,234 pieces, the 1834 quarter eagle is one of the most available dates of the Classic Head design. The date is available in all grades, making it a favorite choice for type collectors, as well as gold specialists.
The present example is a beautiful specimen of this first-date-of-issue coin. The fields are deeply reflective, and the devices are strongly impressed. Handling marks are minimal for the grade. Overall eye appeal is outstanding. Census: 6 in 64 Prooflike, 2 finer (11/08). (PCGS# 77692)
