Description

1834 Quarter Eagle, MS64
New Classic Head Design

1834 $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. Small Head, Breen-6138, Variety 1, R.1. Once pegged at 15 to 1, the ratio of silver to gold increased to nearly 18 to 1 by the early 1830s, and a change was clearly necessary. The weight of gold coins was reduced in 1834 to discourage hoarding and promote circulation. Substantially increased gold mintages resulted from the change, and many of the new Classic Head gold pieces survive today.
This Choice Mint State specimen has pristine, reflective fields, with satin devices, exhibiting brilliant yellow surfaces and generally sharp details, weak only at the centers. This piece has few peers, and is a likely candidate for an advanced collection. Population: 36 in 64, 6 finer (9/12).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25FS, PCGS# 7692)
