Description

Appealing 1838-C Quarter Eagle, AU53
Classic Head, Obverse Mintmark Subtype

1838-C $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. Breen-6147, Winter-1, Variety 20, R.3. Only one die marriage was used to create the smallish production of 7,880 examples of this first-year C-mint issue. The 1838-C is a popular subtype of the Obverse Mintmark style, and its boldly repunched mintmark lends added appeal. This AU53 piece has a few moderate surface pecks consistent with a short time in circulation. Much appeal remains on the antique-gold surfaces, however, and there are no overt marks save a couple of scattered scrapes on the reverse, away from the focal areas. Census: 5 in 53, 50 finer (6/10).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25FZ, PCGS# 7697)
