Description:
Desirable AU 1839 Classic Head Quarter Eagle
1839 $2 1/2 AU50 PCGS. Just one die variety is known for the 1839 Classic Head quarter eagles, and it has sometimes been called an 1839/8 overdate, but it is actually a repunched date. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth commented that this obverse was produced from a defective digit punch. They also wrote that this issue "is a sleeper rarity in the series." This piece is an attractive example with light yellow-gold surfaces tending toward orange. Both sides are relatively smooth with only trivial surface marks. Purchased in the 1930's at face value by Karl Stecher Sr. from coins turned in by the public as per President Roosevelt's March 9, 1933 directive. Kraft envelope with notations "2.50" and "vf" included.
