Description:
1839 Classic Head Quarter Eagle, AU55
Rare in Mint State
1839 $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. CAC. Breen-6148, Variety 21, R.3. All of the 1839 quarter eagles were struck with a defective numeral punch, making the 9 in the date appear to be a 9 over 8, as this issue was produced with a single set of dies. An underrated issue in all grades, surviving examples are much more difficult to locate than the mintage of 27,021 pieces would suggest. Mint State examples are very rare and no coins have been certified above MS63 at either of the leading grading services, with the PCGS population standing at 18 in 55, 10 finer (12/13). A Choice AU example, this coin displays yellow-gold surfaces with subtle areas of orange and peach. A sharp strike adds to the appeal.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25G2, PCGS# 7698)
