Description

1839 Classic Two and a Half, MS60
Scarce Issue in Mint Condition

1839 $2 1/2 MS60 NGC. Breen-6148, Variety-21, R.3. Only one die pairing is known for the 1839 quarter eagle, even though 27,000 pieces were produced. In the past some have called this issue an overdate, but the 9 in the date is actually recut. The Three Pale Gules reverse is the fourth use of this die, used twice in 1836 and once in 1837. The definition on this piece is the opposite of what would be expected from an earlier date in the series: This coin has much stronger central details with slight peripheral weakness. The surfaces are bright overall, and there are numerous, but individually insignificant abrasions peppered over both sides. The 1839 is much scarcer than the mintage would indicate and especially challenging in Uncirculated condition. Census: 2 in 60, 8 finer (5/11).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25G3, PCGS# 7698)

Learn about consigning with us

What I most appreciated was how thorough you were when we initially met, how you were conservative in your estimates, not trying to get me to consign by giving false expectations, and then for delivering above and beyond on your commitment to me of a wonderful marketing campaign and a first rate catalog and photos, all of which resulted in a final total price realized that was nicely higher than what you had told me to expect.
