Description:
Desirable 1839 Quarter Eagle MS61
1839 $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. Only one die variety of 1839 quarter eagles has been identified, which is hardly a surprise given the low emission of 27,000 pieces. The base of the 8 is recut, and the 9 shows repunching classified by some numismatists as an overdate. While collectors covet the branch mint 1839 issues, the Philadelphia Mint examples remain comparatively underrated. This sharply struck representative has a surprisingly unabraded obverse, while the reverse has only a few noticeable field marks. Luster dominates the devices and borders. Among the finest certified examples. Population: 2 in 61, 1 finer (5/08).
