Description:
1839-C Variety 24 Quarter Eagle, MS60
Late Die State
1839-C $2 1/2 MS60 NGC. Variety 24. The mintmark is over the left side of the 3, and the reverse lacks a berry in the olive branch of this scarce variety. Parallel lines in the ear and below the Y of LIBERTY appear to be clash marks from the shield. A few faint clash marks are also evident on the reverse, and a prominent vertical die crack extends through the upright of the E in STATES.
Both sides of this exactingly struck quarter eagle show full satiny yellow luster with myriad surface marks and faint hairlines as the grade implies. This example is the plate coin in Doug Winter's Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint 1838-1861. Census: 4 in 60, 13 finer (11/11), for all three 1839-C varieties.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25G4, PCGS# 7699)
