Description:
1839-O Quarter Eagle, Well Struck AU55
The First New Orleans Gold Coin
1839-O $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Breen-6152, Variety-27, R.3. The 1839-O quarter eagle has the distinction of being the first gold coin produced at the New Orleans Mint. A large number of the 17,781-piece mintage was apparently saved as the issue can be located in XF and AU without too much trouble. Uncirculated coins, on the other hand, are elusive. This Choice AU example displays light to medium yellow-gold surfaces imbued with hints of light green and displays a generally strong strike, though the star centers are soft as typically seen. Both sides are minimally abraded for a gold coin having seen some circulation. A small mark is located on Liberty's cheek just behind the mouth.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25G7, PCGS# 7701)
