Choice AU 1839-O Quarter Eagle
Popular Classic Head,Obverse Mintmark Style

1839-O $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. High Date, Wide Fraction, Breen-6152, Variety 27, R.3. Garrett and Guth rightly point out that collectors and the general public in and around New Orleans must have "scooped up and held onto" examples of these first O-mint quarter eagles, as the New Orleans Mint had opened only the previous year in 1838, striking only half dimes and dimes for circulation along with a few rare half dollars. The obverse mintmark on these quarter eagles certainly aided in identifying their source. This is a still-lustrous orange-gold example with mostly light field chatter, although a couple of thin scrapes appear in the reverse field.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25G7, PCGS# 7701)
