Description:
Near-Mint 1839-O Two and a Half
Scarcer Close Fraction Variety
1839-O $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. CAC. Breen-6153, Variety-28, R.4. The low date, close fraction die variety, seen less often than the high date, wide fraction Variety-27. The 1839-O is the only New Orleans issue of the Classic quarter eagle type, and its mintage of 17,781 pieces confirms the scarcity. The present near-Mint example is struck from medal turn dies and is well struck aside from the uppermost stars. A band of bright luster fills the borders, and relevant marks are confined to the field near the eagle's beak and the obverse margin near 1:30.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25G7, PCGS# 7701)
