Description

1883 Hawaii Dollar, MS63
Lustrous, Original Surfaces

1883 $1 Hawaii Dollar MS63 PCGS. CAC. An attractive design by the oft-maligned Mint Director Charles Barber, struck at the San Francisco Mint. The Akahi Dala (one dollar) commemorated King Kalakaua I and was emblematic of his progressive reign over the Hawaiian islands. The dollars lost their status as legal tender and were recalled upon Hawaii becoming a U.S. territory in 1900. Because of their high silver content, the withdrawn dollars were soon melted and the issue is scarce today. The current coin is boldly struck and appealing with original, silver-gray patina and lilac accents. Population: 15 in 63, 40 finer (6/14). (PCGS# 10995)
