1883 25C HAWAII
Proof Hawaiian Quarter1883 Hawaii Quarter PR 63 PCGS. The 1883 Kingdom of Hawaii coinage was designed by Charles Barber of the Philadelphia mint where all proof specimens were struck. Initially, in September 1883, 6 proof sets were struck which included the quarter (Hapaha); a year later, an additional 20 proof sets were coined in 1884 using the same dies. These sets were issued for presentation to Hawaiian dignitaries and were never offered for public sale. This example exhibits deep, watery, mirrored fields with frosted devices producing a cameo effect as the coin is turned under a light. Both sides are deeply toned in an even layer of original cobalt-blue color. Conservatively graded, this lot will provide an interesting opportunity for the advanced collector of Hawaiiana. To date (5/96), PCGS has certified only 6 total examples. This is the second finest known, with a single PR 66 higher. (PCGS# 10989)
