Description

John Burger Counterstamp on a
Brazilian 1766-R 6400 Reis

(1783-1795) Brazil 1766-R 6400 Reis, John Burger Countermark XF45 PCGS. This gold "Joe" was struck at the Rio Mint in Brazil but circulated in the early United States where it was valued by its gold content. The Philadelphia Mint struck its first gold coins in 1795, but prior to that time, large financial transactions required foreign gold coin. Such pieces were often regulated by goldsmiths who would affix their hallmark to guarantee the gold value. The present coin has a counterstamp by John Burger featuring his fancy monogram. The stamp is over the eye of Portuguese king José I and causes a bulge on the reverse southwest of the crown. New York City silversmith John Burger resided at 207 Queen Street in 1786.

Thanks to Heritage I realized a handsome profit for my coin submissions and intend to send most of the remainder of my collection to Heritage Auction Galleries for future auctions.
