(1785) COPPER Bar Copper AU53 PCGS. Breen-1145, W-8520, R.4....
Scarce (1785) Bar 'Cent,' AU53(1785) COPPER Bar Copper AU53 PCGS. Breen-1145, W-8520, R.4. Specialists know the diagnostics for the distinctive and famous Bar "cent." The A is over the S, which in turn is over the U. Using coin turn, there is a spur down from the right end of the second bar, and a slender die crack connects two bars at the reverse center. Not much is known about the issue aside from the approximate time of its circulation in early American commerce, due to a brief mention in the New Jersey Gazette. The present chocolate-brown example has minor obverse flan imperfections (as made) but the surfaces are pleasing overall. Listed on page 74 of the 2013 Guide Book. (PCGS# 599)
