MS62 Brown Bar Cent, W-8520
Famous Early American Token

(1785) COPPER Bar Copper MS62 Brown PCGS. Breen-1145, W-8520, R.4. Russell Rulau researched the mysterious Bar cent tokens and concluded that they were struck by Thomas Wyon in Birmingham, England. The issuer may never be known for certain, but we do know that they were made to circulate in the United States, because of a surviving November 1785 issue of the New Jersey Gazette. The newspaper noted that "a new and curious kind of coppers have lately made their appearance in New York. ... On the one side are 13 stripes and on the other USA, as was usual on the [Revolutionary War] soldiers' buttons." Though much copied over the years, genuine pieces are identified by a slender die crack near the reverse center and a spur from the end of a "stripe" or bar. This golden-brown example has those diagnostics along with smooth and satiny surfaces. Listed on page 70 of the 2013 Guide Book. Population: 6 in 62 Brown, 8 finer (9/12). (PCGS# 599)
