1652 Noe-5 Oak Tree Shilling, VF30
Remnants of the Original Die

1652 SHILNG Oak Tree Shilling VF30 PCGS. Crosby 2-D, Noe-5, W-470, R.2. 73.0 grains. IN at bottom. A relatively plentiful Oak Tree shilling, the Noe-5 die marriage is generally found in a wide variety of grades. This piece, like most, shows evidence of the coinage die in the form of a raised metal ridge at the upper obverse. This is an attractive piece with pleasing silver-gray surfaces and exceptional eye appeal.
The current reference on Massachusetts silver coinage was published by the American Numismatic Society. Christopher Salmon's The Silver Coins of Massachusetts features remarkable enlarged photos and exceptional variety descriptions. The Salmon reference has new die variety labels that have yet to catch on with the collectors, but the exceptional work is bound to become a classic numismatic reference.
We are pleased to present such a remarkable example of the popular Oak Tree shilling. Listed on page 39 of the 2013 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2ARN, PCGS# 20)
