Description

Choice VF Oak Tree Shilling
Very Late Dies Noe-5

1652 SHILNG Oak Tree Shilling VF35 PCGS. Crosby 2-D, Noe-5, W-470, R.2. 67.9 gn. IN at bottom. A problem-free sea-green and lavender-gray representative of this desirable Early American type. The obverse die is misaligned slightly toward 6 o'clock, and the reverse die is misaligned in the opposite direction. A mild flan wave is due to its rocker press production and causes moderately uneven wear, though most design details are clear.
The die state is as late as the present cataloger has seen on a Noe-5. A large cud at 12 o'clock on the obverse affects the sharpness opposite over the NGL in ENGLAND. A second cud at 6 o'clock on the reverse causes a soft impression near the N in IN. The slender die breaks on the right reverse border are usual for N-5, but the die breaks within the D and O in DOM are uncommon, and die breaks on the N in AN thicken and misshape the letter. Listed on page 37 of the 2012 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2ARN, PCGS# 20)
