Description:
1722 Hibernia Farthing, Martin 1.1-A.1
Elusive Early Pattern Issue, Choice XF
1722 FARTH Hibernia Farthing XF45 NGC. Nelson-2, Breen-168, Martin 1.1-A.1, W-12200, R.7. Ten harp strings. GEORGIUS is at the left obverse rim, with (dot) D : G : REX (dot) to the right. On the reverse, the figure of Hibernia holds the 10-stringed harp before her, rather than behind as on many of the 1723 farthing types. The Garrett III (Bowers and Ruddy, 10/1981, lot 1257) catalog says, "Believed to be a pattern issue. ... Exceedingly rare issue. It is believed that only four to six specimens exist." Breen posited that eight to 10 were known in his 1988 Complete Encyclopedia, calling it a prototype.
This appears to be only the second time we have handled an example, the first being the former Newcomer-Garrett specimen, an MS63 Brown PCGS piece. Glossy brownish-black, on a nice planchet with no distractions and struck in medal rather than coin turn. The total certified population at NGC and PCGS is a measly four coins. Census: 1 in 45, 0 finer (9/10). Listed on page 42 of the 2011 Guide Book. MRB XF40.
Ex: Robert A. Vlack (4/17/1961).
