Description:
1723 Rosa Americana Twopence, AU58
Popular W-1334 Variety
1723 2PENCE Rosa Americana Twopence AU58 NGC. Martin 3-D, W-1334, R.2. The Rosa Americana coinage was proposed by William Wood, an English metallurgist, to ease a shortage of coinage in the Colonies. The pieces were perceived as underweight, and their circulation was fiercely resisted by the Colonists. The coin offered here represents the W-1334 variety, with a stop after REX and No stop after the date. This example is a charming near-Mint specimen, with sharply detailed design elements and a well produced planchet. The surfaces are highlighted by many areas of original red. Listed on page 41 of the 2011 Guide Book. MRB AU55.
Purchased from Richard Picker (8/11/1961).
