1755-A SOU M French Colonies Sou Marque AU58 NGC....
1755-A SOU M French Colonies Sou Marque AU58 NGC. This may actually be a genuine example of this issue, and quite rare as such. The vast majority of this 1755-A issue offered today are circulating counterfeits, themselves quite collectible. Walter Breen noted: "Many circulating counterfeits exist, ranging from grotesque to deceptive; these passed indifferently side by side with the genuine, and are collected today equally indifferently." He also discussed the counterfeit examples of this issue, noting that letters were engraved rather than punched, the mintmark A is actually a barless inverted V, and one variety is a 1755/3 overdate. This example has a properly formed A mintmark, is not an overdate, and appears to be from a die with letters punched, not engraved. The letter D, for example, with two on the obverse and two on the reverse, is identically formed in every instance, each missing its upper left serif and having a notch out of the lower right curve. This indicates that this letter, at least, was put in the die by a letter punch. This is an attractive example with some brown and considerable pewter gray color.(#158607) (PCGS# 158607)
