Description:
MS63 Brown 1766 Pitt Halfpenny
Betts-519, Very Rare in Mint State
1766 1/2P Pitt Halfpenny MS63 Brown PCGS. Betts-519, W-8350, R.3. A splendid chocolate-brown example of this popular Early American token. Thorough evaluation fails to locate any grade-limiting marks or carbon. A subtle gray spot above the middle right side flag is mentioned solely to provide a pedigree identifier. Crisply struck, with slight softness only near Pitt's covered ear. Known as "The Great Commoner," Sir William Pitt spoke in Parliament against the Stamp Act, a tax on the Colonies that required paper documents to possess a London revenue stamp. The much-maligned Stamp Act was repealed in 1766, and the Pitt farthings and halfpennies were issued shortly later. The maker of these tokens is unknown. Although Breen believed it to be an American-struck issue, the quality of engraving suggests a English origin. Listed on page 50 of the 2013 Guide Book.
Ex: Denver Signature (Heritage, 8/2006), lot 5005, which realized $12,650. (PCGS# 236)
