Description

Choice AU 1776 Continental Dollar
CURENCY, Newman 1-C, Pewter

1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURENCY, Pewter AU55 PCGS. Newman 1-C, Breen-1089, R.3. There is no sign of the die break atop the GI in FUGIO, which suggests an early die state, but a later state than lot 2138 in our recent May Long Beach Signature, since the rays near the E in CONGRESS are attenuated. The crossbar of the A in CONTINENTAL slants upward, different than its usual shape and perhaps an anomaly of the strike. Struck in pewter, this slightly wavy and granular piece has typical light to medium gray surfaces. Most of the design elements are boldly defined, although portions of the outer ring on the obverse are absent, above the date and below CURE. Some peripheral weakness is evident on the reverse and both sides have minor marks. Despite these issues, this piece retains considerable luster and presents an attractive appearance. (NGC ID# 2AYN, PCGS# 791)
