Description

1776 Continental Dollar, VF25
Newman 1-C, Late State

1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURENCY, Pewter VF25 PCGS. Newman 1-C, W-8445, R.3. This late die state has an internal cud connecting GI of FUGIO to the inner border above those letters, and the variety is seen with more frequency in this late die state than it is in earlier die states. Continental dollars were struck in pewter, brass, and silver, and those pieces in pewter are the only ones normally encountered. Brass and silver examples are extremely rare.
This example has medium gray surfaces with splashes of darker steel toning. The design is somewhat indistinct as often found. For example, the tops of the two Ts in CONTINENTAL are barely visible, giving those letters the appearance of Is. This pleasing piece should garner considerable bidding interest. (NGC ID# 2AYN, PCGS# 791)
